Supporting dementia care by monitoring indoor environmental quality in a nursing home

The indoor environment quality in care facilities impacts residents’ daily lives. Sensor technology has been proven useful evaluating the of buildings, but process using this information to improve comfort, specifically context nursing homes, is still underdeveloped. Thus, study focuses on monitoring environmental a home Netherlands, supported by professional caregivers’ insights. A campaign was conducted for one year monitor eight rooms, and mixed-method approach used collect analyse data local weather, building facility operation proxies’ responses comfort. Seventeen professionals twenty-two guardians (visitors) answered questions based their opinions observation. results show that low humidity during heating seasons high CO 2 concentration at night were main factors leading environment-related symptoms residents professionals, such as dry eyes. Furthermore, we found outliers can help reveal occupancy, ventilation habits activity time, thus showing application value sensors dementia care. We also recommend non-intrusive taking into account room layouts occupants’ conditions before installing sensors.
